Why Kitchen Placement Matters in Vastu
The kitchen is associated with nourishment, health, and the overall well-being of a family, making it one of the most important spaces to get right in Vastu Shastra. A well-placed kitchen is believed to support good health, harmony among family members, and financial stability, while an incorrectly placed one can lead to recurring health or relationship issues within the household.
Vastu for the kitchen covers more than just its direction, it also considers the placement of the stove, sink, storage, and even the direction a person faces while cooking.
Ideal Direction for the Kitchen
The south-east corner of a home is considered the most favorable location for a kitchen, since this zone is ruled by Agni, the fire element. The north-west direction is considered the next best alternative. The north-east corner, associated with water and purity, is generally best avoided for a kitchen, since the fire and water elements can clash in this zone.
Common Kitchen Vastu Considerations
- Position the stove so the person cooking faces east while cooking.
- Keep the stove and sink separated, placing them directly next to or opposite each other can create a fire-water imbalance.
- Store drinking water and heavy utensils in the north-east or north part of the kitchen.
- Keep the kitchen well-ventilated with good natural light wherever possible.
- Avoid a kitchen directly below or above a puja room or bedroom.
Remedies for an Incorrectly Placed Kitchen
Not every home has the flexibility to relocate the kitchen to its ideal direction. If your kitchen falls in a less favorable zone, Vastu offers remedies, specific colors, placements of the stove or sink, and symbolic corrections, that help balance the energy without any demolition or structural change.
